Well, let's see......it all started back in the day....when
I all I dreamed of was doing nails....well, okay not really. As a kid, everything that I thought I wanted to do WAS
in the fashion industry so I guess in a small way it was destined for me to do nails as a living. In high school,
I took accounting and thought that was the best thing since chocolate ice cream--weird but true! It was easy and I liked
it! SO after school I went to a business college and finished my degree in accounting with the intentions of continuing
my education and one day become a CPA (mom's dream and mine, I thought!) and becoming that independent career woman.
Well, let's just say that didn't happen, so off to the adventures of Kammie and her "careers."
Well, here are some of the other careers I have had trying to find
my niche' in life--what am I going to be when I grow up???? I still don't know, however doing nails is not so bad.
Guess I'll keep on with it! :O)
Jack of all trades, master of none!
- Co-Owner of a flower stand with mom
- Bookkeeper/Office Manager
- Bartender
- Restaurant Manager
- Telecom Analyst
- Accountant
See a trend here.........always working with people as well as working
with numbers, so being a nail technician I have combined my background into my existing profession. BUT the best part
about being a nail technician is that I am self-employed! I set my own hours, and can't blame anyone but me!
Why a nail technician???? After being in accounting for some time
it was time for a change, especially since my corporate job was on the line due to down-sizing, politics and possibly
the company being sold.
Well, my sister went through school and got her manicurist license and
thought IF she could do it (she never finished high school) THEN obviously I could do it and even better. Plus I thought
you could make really good money if you applied yourself. Well, that part is true EXCEPT it's not as easy as everyone
thinks it is.
Always having high expectations of myself, this is a very hard industry
to succeed. I did know that it would take a long time to build a full appointment book, however, I did not expect
to go through so much frustration on the "doing nails" part. Some of you that have been with me have heard my
frustrations as well as clients enduring my learning curves. And to those clients, I have to say, 'THANK YOU!!!!"
But now, after 2 1/2 yrs I have improved, but have far more room for
improvement. You can always learn more in this industry, so I continue my education through tradeshows and local
classes. I still consider myself a "newbie" (industry term for newer techs) and wish to master my trade, even though
some days I want to throw in the towel, BUT I have to say the people I confide in keep me going--thanks to those people--they
know who they are!
